God Bless You Canada
This has to be one of my least favorite pieces of war propaganda for a couple of reasons. First, it is the exact same song as God Bless the USA. Second, the change up of the words God Bless the USA to Canada sounds so awkward. Third I can’t stand God Bless the USA and its connotations.
I am proud to be Canadian, but not because of some pseudo-American song. Seriously Canada has some amazing talent, couldn’t we embrace that talent and have a decent and original song?

The lyrics don’t really fit for Canada… like our flag doesn’t really stand for freedom. Just saying…
I will say that Canada could work on some patriotic songs. The US seems chock full of them. Sometimes I’m disappointed in Canadian patriotic apathy.

A healthy balance of patriotism is what is needed. Some countries can get downright tacky, arrogant, ignorant and obnoxious with their patriotism. This song for falls into all those categories for Canada.
I am looking forward to the results of the Great Canadian Song Quest this coming Monday. I am sure there will be many classic patriotic songs coming out of this.

I thought it was actually kinda sweet in its own way, since it feels like Greenwood’s trying to “reach out” as it were in this song. A bit silly, yes, but it’s ultimately harmless, and the only reason people don’t know any Canadian patriotic songs is because all the good ones are never given the attention they deserve (yes, they DO exist).
I’d consider this good, even if its not at all subtle, for Amero-Canadian friendship. As for the negative connotations of “God Bless the USA”, those are really only recent (due to some bad policy choices by a less-than stellar president).
